Cool SEO Tip: Automatically Ping Your Blog Posts

So I was perusing the forums today when I came across a cool little tip I thought I’d share with you.

The funny part is, the guy who gave this advice had given the wrong answer. He totally mis-read the question. So the other readers were annoyed but I thought it was a gem.

As you’re working your SEO strategy, one thing you may already be doing is PINGing your sites, videos, blog posts, etc.

This alerts the world that you’ve added some new content out onto the web. Ideally, you get the search engines crawling your content and indexing your site.

A tool I’ve used online is Pingler.com. I enter my info in and hit the button and blamo… Internet beware.

Well, this dude on the forum pointed out that WordPress can actually do this for you auto-magically. All you do is enter the same sites Pingler.com uses into your ‘Writing’ settings and you’re done.

I’ve made a little instructional video to show you how I did it.

UPDATE: Please take note of the comment by Ryan Parenti below.  He’s recommending cbnet Ping Optimizer.  I looked into this and it looks solid.  As long as you do not publish and then continually update your post, either method will work fine.   Either way, you still must add all the ping sites into the area I show you above.

Just one thing. Make sure none of the services are included in other services (such as pingomatic) or you will be pinging a service twice. This may be look like spam.

I go through and make sure they aren’t duplicated.

    Mike,

Great info. I’m going to add to my blogs right now.

Thanks for the insight into excel. Always a bit of a problem for me.

While giving free advice and the operative word is “giving” perhaps you can solve a conundrum i’ve had trying to get rid of the spaces when i download keyword ideas from Google. The purpose being to run a domain search on the keywords.

    Thanks again fellow Nutmegger

    Crazy snow on Monday, eh?

      Thanks Nat.

Are you talking about getting rid of all spaces? Like if something was ‘My Keyword Phrase” you want to make it “mykeywordphrase”? Or are you looking to trim leading or trailing spaces? Let me know and I can maybe make another video.

  3. Ryan says:

    Hi Mike,

Pinging is a very important part of blogging and it can easily go overlooked so I am sure many people got a lot out of the video.

There is a few things to be aware of though when you use an extended ping list.

The biggest problem with an extended ping list is being labeled as a ping spammer through accidental auto pinging. For example if you update a previous post multiple times you will ping for each revision. This can result in your domain being banned by pinging services.

To overcome this I recommend the cbnet Ping Optimizer plugin. It basically prevents excessive pinging. (it’s like the max press ping optimizer but without the forced optin)

Also if you want to go way over the top you can actually use your user’s IP address to ping your blog for you. There is a bit of “ninja code” involved but luckily yet again the powerhouse of wordpress has simplified it into a simple plugin.

So to have your users ping your blog for you when they visit your website use the Link Log Matcher plugin and the PPinger plugin. These two plugins can help quite a bit with long term SEO rankings.

Also as a side note my personal ping list might be of help to your readers…

    Mike,

I liked to get rid of all the spaces.

E.G. weight loss now would become weightlossnow.

With 250 keywords this can be a daunting task.

Messed around with Notepad and notetab lite but could never make this work.

if i could do this with Excel i’d be the Man! Well at least it would make my life easier and isn’t that what this is all about.

Thanks again for providing some really useful information.

    Nat

    Hi Mike,

I’ve been using cbnet Ping Optimizer plugin on all my blogs, as well. Easy to set up. And it’s free.

Speaking of free blog plugins, I use Date Exclusion SEO Version 3.2.4. It’s free from Arne Brachold at: http://www.arnebrachhold.de/

I set it up so visitors can’t see my publishing dates. Real handy for those little 5 – 10 page blogsites.
You can download it directly inside the WP admin panel.

Until next time, may all your failures be lessons learned and your successes really piss off the people who badmouth you behind your back. (Not that your or I would know anyone like that…)
